What a difference a few months can make. August 16th 2003 was
Ports opening game in this seasons Super League and Bathgate took the 3
points with a 0-1 victory. Hard tackling was the name of the game that
day with two red cards for Bathgate so Port visited Creamery Park this
afternoon knowing this could be another bruising encounter.
Tayport settled well having their fair share of midfield and possession.
9 minute mark and a Barry Mcnaughton effort from 22 yards screamed over
the crossbar. The opening goal came on the 26th minute mark after
Bathgate's John Murphy was brought down inside the area by Roberto
Morris (yellow Card). Thistle's penalty taker Jack neatly sent
Fraser Fitzpatrick the wrong way. Tayport responded quickly from a free
kick with Steven Stewart flighting in a high ball to the head of John
Ward who sent the ball back across the goal area to the feet of Scott
Peters for an easy tap in. The second period opened with both teams
fighting out for control of the midfield. 50th minute mark and the
ball broke to Sean Christie 35 yards out. Sean looked up to see the
Thistle keeper of his line and sent a an absolute bullet of a shot
goalbound. Three minutes later Bathgte were down to ten men after Murphy
was sent in for an early bathafter a head butt on Roberto Morris. Brian Craik scored a 3rd for Port on the
78th minute mark with a simple tap in. Tayport looked in full control
and the Gaffer decided on a run out for R Hunter, B Honeyman, and back
from injury J Elliot replacing Sean Christie, Brian Craik and Allan
Ramsay. Port continued to press and nearly scored another when
substitute Kevin Heenan struck the underside of the crossbar with a
22yard strike.
