05/05/04 - Thornton Hibs v Dundonald Bluebell Interbrew Cup Fife

Keeper rooted to the spot

On a cold spring evening Dundonald Bluebell were the visitors to Memorial Park for this Interbrew Cup match. Fife League champions Thornton Hibs started the match favorites to proceed to the next round but the Bluebells were never going to make it easy for them. The opening 30 minutes was very quiet with both teams having their share of the play. The best opportunity fell to Hibs in the 11th minute after a scramble in the Bluebells goal area the ball broke free and the resulting shot  was well handled by the Bluebells keeper. The match hotted up just before the break with |Dundonald breaking down the left and sending in a searching ball across the front of the Hibs goalmouth. All it needed was a touch from one of the three forwards but it was turned away for a corner at the back post. Hibs cleared the corner well sending the ball down the left a cracking cross ball was met perfectly falling to the feet of the Hibs forward who sent in a raking shot which was turned away by the fully stretched keeper for a corner. The second half opened with Hibs showing great urgency down the left grabbing a quick corner. The corner was sent back down the line quickly and the defender sent over a cross ball which which may have been a shot. The ball glanced of the head of a Bluebell defender into the left hand corner of the Bluebells goal and the keeper rooted to the spot. Dundonald nearly equalised in the 58th minute with an effort headed off the Hibs goal line. There was some end to end play with Dundonald finishing the stronger but unable to get that  equaliser.

01/05/04 Fife League Crossgates v Lochore Welfare

Pat McAuleys men made it two wins out of two with a hard fought win at Humbug Park. Neither team created many chances in what was an uneventful first 45 minutes until Welfare's centre forward, Gary Sutherland broke the deadlock with a wonder strike on 42 minutes. Standing with his back to goal 25 yards out, he received a high pass which he chested down before smashing it on the volley over the Crossgates keeper who was caught off his line.
In the second half Primrose really turned on the pressure but the Welfare back four managed to hold on for the three points with some resolute defending. The only black spot for Lochore was the loss of midfielder Darren Wilson after 10 minutes with a hamstring problem which could rule him out for the remainder of the season.

Lochore team: Crowe, Bishop, R.Kinnell, Duncan, Burke, Moodie, Shankland, Hodge, Sutherland, Wilson (Jaffa), Currie. Subs not used were Grieve, Shields and Dudgeon.
